What is the history of Equiano Rum?
Equiano takes its name from Olaudah Equiano. Born in 1745 in what is now Nigeria, Equiano was kidnapped as a child and enslaved. He was sold again and again before eventually being bought by a merchant, Robert King. Equiano worked on King’s shipping routes in the Caribbean and was allowed to earn money by trading on the side, eventually saving up enough to buy his freedom from King.
He later settled in England, where he became involved in the abolitionist movement and went on to write a seminal memoir entitled The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African.
